Wasco Recreation And Parks District History

About WRPD

Wasco Recreation and Parks District is a Special District operating under Section 5780 of the California State Code.

Mission Statement

It is the mission of the Wasco Recreation and Parks District to create recreational opportunities for growth and enhancement by developing diverse services and programs that promote citizen involvement and a strong sense of community while striving to increase the social, cultural and physical well-being of its residents and visitors.

Who is WRPD

WRPD was established in 1948 by the Kern County Board of Supervisors for the purpose of providing the community of Wasco with recreation and park facilities.  As an independent special district, it does not operate within the departmental structure of the City of Wasco or the County of Kern, but instead has its own independent Board of Directors, whose duties are to "organize, promote, conduct and advertise programs for community recreations: establish systems of recreation and recreation centers including parks and parkways, and to acquire, construct, improve, maintain and operate recreation centers within or without the territorial limits of the public authority."

The Board of Directors is comprised of five members, two are appointed by the Board of Supervisors and three are appointed by the City of Wasco. Each member serves a staggered four-year term. (see more information under Board of Directors)

WRPD Boundaries
Wasco Recreation and Parks District boundaries are broader than the city limits of the City of Wasco.  The District maintains and operates 7 park sites within the city of Wasco.  The District owns three parks in the city along with the baseball facility on Maple and Poso.  The City owns two of the parks which are under an agreement with WRPD for maintenance and programing.

 WRPD Strives to...

  • Provide an environment for kids to move, play and enjoy.
  • Provide clean and safe parks, green spaces, and recreational programs and facilities.
  • Provide efficient services to Wasco residents regardless of income, background, and ability.
  • Effectively plan for the future needs of Wasco residents.
  • Continually strive to improve existing facilities while seeking opportunities for future development.
  • Create a partnership with the Wasco Community to improve the quality of life for all citizens.
